Well yay 🌙 I’m glad you did because as a San Francisco native, Half Moon Bay is one of my favorite lil weekend getaways. It’s less than an hour from the city, has fantastic seafood, beautiful ocean views, and just the right amount of quiet luxury. So keep reading for a California native’s take on the perfect coastal Half Moon Bay weekend getaway!

Short on time? Here are my top hotel picks when deciding where to stay for your Half Moon Bay weekend itinerary (including our #1 dog-friendly hotel pick)

Getting to Half Moon Bay is relatively easy, which is part of why it makes such a perfect weekend escape! Important to note: you’ll most likely need a car for your Half Moon Bay weekend itinerary and to get around once you’re there.
If you’re coming from San Francisco, you’re looking at about a ~45-minute to 1-hour drive depending on traffic, usually via Highway 280 to Highway 92! (All the locals know that 280 is where it’s at compared to the 101 which is almost always filled with traffic). If you’re coming from other parts of the Bay Area then the journey will be slightly longer, depending on how far east or north you are.
Still need to fly to California? No worries! Flying in from out of town is just as simple. Most people fly into San Francisco International Airport (SFO), about 30 minutes away, or San Jose International Airport (SJC), roughly 45 minutes away, and then rent a car since public transportation options are pretty limited.
If you’re driving to Half Moon Bay from Southern California, then your journey will be a bit different (and much longer). You’ll need plan for a 6 to 8 hour drive depending on where you’re starting and how many stops you make. The fastest route is usually straight up Highway 101, which is efficient but pretty uneventful. So if you’ve got the time and want to turn the journey into a full-on coastal road trip, Highway 1 is definitely the move.
Once you get into Half Moon Bay, you’ll quickly realize the area isn’t very big, and that’s part of its charm.
The town itself feels laid-back and easy to navigate, with a small downtown area, a handful of neighborhoods, and miles of coastline all spread out but never overwhelming. You can drive from one end of town to the other in about 10 to 15 minutes, and most beaches, restaurants, and hotels are just a short drive apart!

I feel like Half Moon Bay is one of those destinations where it never gets too hot or too cold. Kinda like San Francisco tbh. Like… it’s always kind of a gamble with weather in this part of town which means you shouldn’t let the time of year stop you from visiting or putting together a Half Moon Bay weekend itinerary.
Since my husband and I are only an hour away, we’ve visited Half Moon Bay probably every month of the year. And the weather is kinda the same lol foggy in the mornings, clears up during the day, and then gets chilly at night!
If weather is really important to you though, then i’d probably recommend visiting in early fall. From August to October, you’ll typically see the warmest and clearest conditions of the year, with daytime highs averaging around 65 to 70°F (18 to 21°C) and fewer foggy mornings than early summer.
Spring is another great option if you don’t mind cooler temps. Expect highs around 58 to 63°F (14 to 17°C), lush green hills, wildflowers, and lighter crowds.
Winter brings moodier coastal scenery and great surf watching, but it’s also the coolest and wettest season, with daytime temps hovering around 55 to 58°F (13 to 14°C) and cooler evenings.
No matter when you go, Half Moon Bay is a layers destination year-round. Coastal California loves to surprise you with an evening chill!

I swear I take living in California for granted sometimes. It’s only when I sit down to write about places like Half Moon Bay, Napa, or Guerneville that I’m reminded just how many beautiful, design-forward boutique stays we have at our fingertips. Every nook and cranny along the central coast of California is truly stunning, especially once the marine layer finally burns off and Half Moon Bay is no exception.
One thing to keep in mind is that Half Moon Bay is small, like roughly 12 square miles small. That means there aren’t a ton of hotels to choose from, but honestly, that’s part of the charm.
The options here are thoughtful, cozy, and packed with character. You’ll find everything from family-run B&Bs to stylish boutique hotels to the iconic Ritz-Carlton. Yes, it’s worth the splurge and yes, the bagpiper & s’mores by the fire during sunset is as magical as people say.
And no, you don’t have to stay there to enjoy the property so make sure to book yourself into lunch or a spa day at the very least!

So keep reading for my roundup of the best boutique hotels for your perfect weekend in Half Moon Bay. These are the stays that make a coastal escape feel extra special 🌊

For a town so tiny, Half Moon Bay definitely punches above its weight when it comes to food and drink (especially with fresh fish and local brews). You’ll find everything from casual roadside spots (like Dad’s Luncheonette @dadsluncheonette) and bakeries to seafood-forward restaurants serving some of the freshest catches on the coast.
Crab, oysters, and clam chowder are pretty big here (duh) but there’s also a growing coffee and craft beer scene, with cozy cafés that are perfect for slow foggy mornings and laid-back breweries that are great for you and fido during sunset.
You won’t find any restaurants with a Michelin star here (in a good way) but the restaurants here are delicious, comforting, and coastal in the best possible way. Here are my top 5 favorite places to eat and drink at every time we visit Half Moon Bay 🍴
📍281 Capistrano Rd, Half Moon Bay, CA 94019

Some of you might know that I’ve previously lived in London and have yet to find fish n chips that live up to my time in England…until now. Hooooly sh*t am I glad I stumbled upon Barbara’s Fishtrap while taking the dog out for a walk along the water.
Barbara’s Fishtrap is a no-frills fish shack serving some of the best fried seafood you’ll ever have. I ordered their famous fish n chips which came with FOUR massive pieces of perfectly breaded fish and a side of fries. Which I then proceeded to DRENCH in malt vinegar and salt. Just like the English 🙂
We saw a ton of people get their fried prawns as well. I also ordered a cup of clam chowder for the drive back to San Francisco and was in heaven. My husband wasn’t a huge fan of me eating this in the car but hey! That’s marriage.
If you have the time, I recommend dining in for the full experience but their take-out window is just as good. There’s also plenty of spots along the harbor for you to eat your food in case you don’t want to wait for a table. This is easily my #1 recommendation for food in Half Moon Bay!
📍1410 Cabrillo Hwy S, Half Moon Bay, CA 94019

Can you tell I love (and miss) English culture? But also, jesus christ. Half Moon Bay has some of the best fish n chips I’ve ever tasted. I literally had it 3x in one weekend. We stumbled upon Cameron’s Pub & Restaurant one night when we were looking for a fun place to eat and drink.
My husband had just finished a round of golf up the road and wanted a refreshing beer. Plus we saw this super cute double decker red bus from Highway 1 and knew we had to pop by for a beverage!
Cameron’s is a true English pub known for its 19 beers on tap and over 60 bottled varieties, plus a whimsical collection of more than 2,000 beer cans. This family-run pub feels like a cozy home away from home. They serve allll the best English classics like pasties (minced pies), bangers and mash, fish n chips, cottage pie, and more.
Don’t worry they still got all the best American classics too like pizza, mozzarella sticks, annnddd you can even order a baked potatoe with all the fixings! I ordered one and drenched it in chilli.
This place is suuuuch a vibe. Besides the fun double decker bus outside (that you can sit in), they’ve also got a dog-friendly outdoor patio, weekly events like Trivia Tuesdays and karaoke on weekends!
This is definitely our favorite underrated gem in the area and the perfect place to get a lil tipsy during your Half Moon Bay weekend getaway.
📍240 Capistrano Rd, Half Moon Bay, CA 94019

For a small little town, there’s one thing that Half Moon Bay does well. Coffee shops & bakeries!
If you’re wandering around during your Half Moon Bay weekend getaway and find yourself craving a coffee and something sweet…then you need to head to Caffé Mezza Luna (located in the same area as Barbara’s Fishtrap).
This Italian-inspired café feels like the perfect little stop right by the coast serving rich, delicious coffee that smells (and tastes) like heaven and pairs beautifully with a rainbow sprinkle sugar cookie straight out of the jar (I ordered one and it absolutely hit the spot).
Beyond cookies and coffee, they’re also known for classic Italian cakes, gelato, and European-style pastries. They even have a large dog-friendly outdoor patio!
📍604 Main St, Half Moon Bay, CA 94019

Like I said…for a small California coastal town…Half Moon Bay seriously delivers when it comes to family-owned bakeries 🥖
Located right in downtown Half Moon Bay, Moonside Bakery & Cafe is one of those hidden gems you’re thrilled to stumble upon. They’ve got great outdoor seating for sunny days, plus a cozy indoor space that’s perfect when the coastal fog or rain rolls in.
Moonside Bakery is a European-style, full-line bakery known for its impressive spread of danishes, pastries, cookies, tarts, cakes, and pies, all baked fresh. Beyond sweets, their fast-casual menu covers both breakfast and lunch with hearty, comforting options like eggs, waffles, and pancakes in the morning, plus wood-fired pizzas, homemade soups, sandwiches on freshly baked bread, and fresh salads later in the day!
We got a handful of baked goods from here but my favorite was the $5 cinnamon raisin twist! It was flaky, cinnamon-y, and kept me completely full until lunchtime at Sam’s!
📍4210 CA-1, Half Moon Bay, CA 94019

“Don’t go to Sam’s. It’s only for tourists” is what I continuously kept hearing (and reading on Reddit) but I’m here to tell you I’m glad I ignored that advice.
First of all, the food is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. I bet you can’t tell me the last time you ordered a lobster roll and it ACTUALLY came with massive amounts of lobster on it. Places usually skimp on the lobster and I’m here to tell you that SAM’S ABSOLUTELY DELIVERRRSSS.
I get that this place might seem like a tourist trap but it’s well-known for a reason. The views are epic here, and there’s so many different places to grab food and enjoy the beach. You can dine directly on their dog-friendly patio, walk down to the wooden lawn chairs, or walk directly down to the beach and hangout there.
Don’t listen to the trolls on Reddit. I’m here to tell you that the dressed lobster roll with homemade potato chips and their bowl of clam chowder is 100% worth the stop.

Being a small town along the coast, you can probably guess that most of the top things to do in Half Moon Bay will revolve around the ocean! (Except our water is freezing here so don’t worry, none of my recommendations actually involve you getting IN the water).
Unless you’re one of those brave souls that likes to swim or surf in a wetsuit in the Pacific Ocean.
Which is great! But that’s 100% not me lol. So if you like coastal walks, shopping around local boutiques, and a light activity or two – I got ya covered!
There’s actually so many activities and things to do in Half Moon Bay but I’ve narrowed it down to my top 5 things to do in Half Moon Bay you won’t want to miss 👇

My favorite part about small coastal towns like Half Moon Bay is that there’s usually an equally charming downtown area. And Downtown Half Moon Bay is just that!
Downtown Half Moon Bay is centered along historic Main Street and spans just a few very walkable blocks plus the nearby cross streets, making it compact, charming, and easy to explore on foot in a couple hours or less! (Or even longer if you pop into my favorite wine and cheese shop for a tasting)
The heart of downtown runs roughly from the historic bridge area through several blocks of shops and restaurants, right where Main Street meets Highway 92 and CA-1, so it’s super easy to access whether you’re coming from inland or cruising down the coast.
You’ll find classic small-town vibes here with a mix of locally owned boutiques, gift shops, art galleries, and coastal home décor, plus plenty of places to eat ranging from casual cafes like Moonside Bakery (get the cinnamon raisin twist it’s DELICIOUSSS) to more polished spots like Pasta Moon (recognized by Michelin Guide).

Most of Half Moon Bay is pretty dog-friendly as well so we always end up walking our furry friend around downtown and popping into the shops. Some of my favorite stores in Downtown Half Moon Bay include:

Is Half Moon Bay giving Scotland vibes??? Because honestly it should!!!
Between the dramatic cliffs, moody ocean views, and green coastline… Half Moon Bay feels very Scottish-esque (minus the Highland cows unfortunately), and that feeling peaks at The Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay.
Every single evening at sunset (rain or shine) a bagpiper dressed in full Scottish attire plays live bagpipes along the bluff overlooking the Pacific!! It’s one of those experiences that feels way more magical than you’d expect and you DON’T need to be staying at the hotel to enjoy it either.
The property is open to visitors, so you can grab a drink at the oceanfront bar, cozy up by the fire pits, and watch the sunset with the bagpipes playing in the background.
If you want to fully commit to the Scottish fantasy, The Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay also has a Macallan House on site that’s open daily from 5pm to 11pm, offering whiskey tastings and fine glasses of scotch.
If you can swing it, I highly recommend booking an overnight stay here for an epic Half Moon Bay itinerary but even just a sunset visit is a must-do!
Pro tip: You can also roast your own s’mores by the fire pits! The s’mores kits from The Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay are about ~$50 but there’s a Safeway roughly two miles away where you can grab your own graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate for closer to $15.
We stocked up before leaving San Francisco and had zero regrets 🍫

Okay yes I’m giving you an ocean rec but don’t worry, I’m not recommending you actually go into the water! You can get the full California experience from participating in one of the top things to do in Half Moon Bay – The Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail!
The Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail stretches for roughly ~7 miles running along the coastline from Pillar Point Harbor in the north down to Mirada Road in the south, with multiple access points throughout Half Moon Bay.
The trail is mostly flat and paved, making it ideal for walking, biking, jogging, or stroller-friendly strolls, and you don’t need to tackle the full length to enjoy it. (We sure as heck don’t but we like to explore different sections of it each time we visit).
Along the way, you’ll pass dramatic coastal bluffs, sandy beaches like the dog-friendly Poplar Beach and Miramar Beach, open fields, and endless Pacific Ocean views, with plenty of spots to stop and take photos or watch surfers below.
Because it’s broken up into sections near beaches, hotels, and neighborhoods, it’s easy to hop on for a quick scenic walk or spend a few hours covering longer stretches, depending on how much time you have.
If you’re short on time, I highly recommend hopping on by The Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay and finishing off the sunset with the bagpiper! You get to kill two top-rated things to do in Half Moon Bay with one stone.

Want to see more during your Half Moon Bay weekend itinerary than your little legs can carry you?! I have a solution for that!
One of the easiest and most fun ways to explore Half Moon Bay is on a ~2 hour guided e-bike tour. You’ll cruise along scenic coastal trails, pass through town, and stop at a few standout viewpoints like the famous big-wave Mavericks Beach and Half Moon Bay State Beach, all while letting the pedal assist do most of the work.
The ~2 hour guided e-bike tour comes with a local guide who shares interesting bits about the area’s history and landscape, plus everything you need to ride comfortably. It’s perfect for those wanting to see a lot in a short amount of time without feeling like you just did a full workout 🚲
This activity usually sells out (especially in the warmer months) so highly recommend booking tickets for ~$110/person via Viator in advance as this is one of the top things to do in Half Moon Bay!

Teeing off at Half Moon Bay Golf Links is an unforgettable coastal experience and one of the top things to do in Half Moon Bay, even if you’re just a casual golfer!!! Located right on the cliffs along more than a mile of beach and tucked beside the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay this world-class facility features 36 holes across two very different courses!
The Ocean Course is the more forgiving of the two, with wider fairways and more holes hugging the coastline, meaning nonstop ocean views and dramatic finishes.
The Old Course (designed by Arnold Palmer) is tighter and more technical, weaving through trees and neighborhoods with blind doglegs, but it still delivers iconic cliffside holes toward the end.
Green fees run around ~$180/each including a cart, but unlike Pebble Beach, there’s no hotel stay requirement to play.
One thing to note: there’s no on-site driving range, but there is an excellent putting and chipping area with bunkers, and a full range just about 10 minutes up the road.
It’s an easy activity for both men and women, and if golf isn’t your thing, no worries! You can stroll the coastal trail, book a spa treatment at the Ritz, or grab a cozy meal and a pint at my favorite English pub, Cameron’s Pub and Restaurant, just down the road while your partner plays.

Check out my sample Half Moon Bay weekend itinerary (based on my husband and I’s typical weekend staycations):

If you’re planning a dog-friendly weekend getaway, Half Moon Bay is honestly one of the easiest coastal towns in Northern California to visit with Fido. It’s laid-back, outdoorsy, and welcoming to both humans and doggos.
There are several dog-friendly beaches in Half Moon Bay, including Poplar Beach and Miramar Beach, where leashed dogs are welcome year-round. (As with most beaches, if your pup is well-behaved and under voice control then you’re usually fine to let them off leash).
We love taking Bagel for long walks along the sand or hopping on sections of the dog-friendly coastal trail, which is perfect for scenic strolls without committing to a full hike.
When it comes to dining, Half Moon Bay has plenty of dog-friendly patios. Spots like The Barn, Ketch Harbor Pub, Sam’s Chowder House, Cameron’s Pub & Restaurant, and the local breweries like Half Moon Bay Brewing and Hop Dogma around Pillar Point Harbor all make it easy to grab a meal or drink without leaving your dog behind.
Hotels are another big win here. Some of the most dog-friendly hotels in Half Moon Bay include The Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay (our top pick for pampered pups), The Beach House Hotel, and Oceano Hotel & Spa.
Bottom line: if you’re looking for a relaxed, dog-friendly coastal escape where your pup can join in on most of the fun, Half Moon Bay checks all the boxes 🐾

Half Moon Bay weather is quintessential coastal California. Foggy mornings, sunny afternoons, and chilly evenings are all fair game, sometimes in the same day.
Just like San Francisco (where we live), it’s very much a layers destination year-round, so packing smart will make your weekend way more comfortable.
Here’s what I recommend packing for a Half Moon Bay weekend:

Who says 48 hours isn’t enough time to unplug, unwind, and pretend you’re in Scotland for the weekend?
With the right Half Moon Bay weekend itinerary (aka this one that you just read), you can pack in a ton of coastal walks, oceanfront dining, cozy pubs, and boutique shopping without ever feeling rushed.
From strolling the coastal trail to watching the sunset bagpiper, golfing cliffside, and eating your way through Barbara’s and Sam’s, there are so just many things to do in Half Moon Bay that fit perfectly into a short escape.
This Half Moon Bay weekend itinerary is proof that you don’t need a long trip to feel fully recharged, especially when the town is this compact and easy to explore.
Whether it’s your first visit or a return trip, mixing a little adventure with a lot of downtime is 🔑 and I hope my guide was helpful in hi-lighting all my favorite restaurants and the best things to do in Half Moon Bay to make the most of your stay.
