Planning a trip to my beautiful city by the bay, but looking for some fun and easy day trips from San Francisco to add to your itinerary? Or maybe you’re already here, but somehow got bored (I get it) so you’re ready to find some new adventures outside the city? As a Bay Area native and San Francisco resident for almost a decade, I spend most of my weekends taking day trips from San Francisco. It probably goes without saying but… I moonlight as a travel blogger in my free time (thanks for reading my blog) but work full-time in tech. As part of the job, I’m basically required to constantly explore new places.
Whenever I’m home in San Francisco, if I don’t escape the city at least once a month, I start to seriously go insane.
But thankfully due to it’s location, San Francisco makes it easy to grab a rental car and hit the road for an easy and fun getaway. And I get to be back in my own bed at night?
Seriously, what a win.
Are you looking for a Bay Area day trip with epic views? Or do you prefer a day trip from San Francisco where you do nothing but relax? Wonderful.
I promise there’s a day trip from San Francisco with your name on it, regardless of whether you want to eat, hike, drink, explore, or relax.
To make it even easier, I’ve sorted this list from the closest to the farthest day trips from central San Francisco! So you can pick your adventure based on how far you’re willing to drive.

⏰ ~22 minutes // ~14.7 miles

Pacifica, California is a cute little coastal town just south of San Francisco. They’re known for having stunning beaches, lotsa surfers, and a ton of great hiking trails. (My dad and I love stopping in Pacifica sometimes on our way to SFO). The weather can be hit or miss sometimes but when the sun comes out, it’s seriously gorgeous. At just 22 minutes from downtown, Pacifica is one of the quickest day trips from San Francisco you can take.
Known for: stunning beaches, hiking, surfing, and relaxing
🚗 Getting There: Take Highway 1 South for about 14 miles from downtown SF — it’s a ~22 minute drive. No direct public transit, so a car or rideshare is your best bet.
⏰ ~30 minutes // ~15 miles

Tucked away in Marin County, Larkspur is a charming and “suburban” escape from the city. There’s a ton of cozy cafes, cute shops, and a farmer’s market on the weekends. (It’s also THE place to move to if you’re in your early 30s and just starting a family). It’s also really convenient to get to Larkspur from the San Francisco ferry building, which is what makes it such an easy and picturesque day trip from San Francisco.
Known for: boutique shops, cafes, local goods and eateries
Ps. Not sure where to start in San Francisco? Head to the blog for my complete 3-day guide to my hometown!
🚗 Getting There: The easiest option is the Golden Gate Ferry from the San Francisco Ferry Building (~30 min). By car, take US-101 North across the Golden Gate Bridge (~30 min). Parking is easy near the Larkspur Landing ferry terminal.
⏰ ~30 minutes // ~16 miles

I view Tiburon as pretty similar to Larkspur, but slightly better views and more upscale dining options. Tiburon is perfect for a relaxing afternoon with a stroll along the waterfront or a ferry ride to Angel Island. It’s one of my favorite easy day trips from San Francisco for stunning bay views.
Known for: epic views of San Francisco and Angel Island, delicious restaurants along the water
🚗 Getting There: Take the Blue & Gold Ferry from Pier 41 or the Ferry Building for a scenic 30-minute ride. By car, take US-101 North and exit at Tiburon Blvd (~30 min). Biking over the Golden Gate Bridge is also a popular option!
⏰ ~45 minutes // ~22 miles

A paradise for nature lovers, Mount Tamalpais aka Mt. Tam for short, is known for having scenic hiking trails with panoramic views of the Bay Area. It’s a short drive north for a day of outdoor adventure and natural beauty. If you visit though, you HAVE to stay for sunset to watch Karl the fog creep in over the bay. It’s seriously one of the most beautiful views we have in the Bay Area. Mt. Tam is one of the best nature-focused day trips from San Francisco you can do.
Known for: iconic hiking and panoramic views of San Francisco
Looking for things to do when you head back to San Francisco? Head to the blog for a complete list of top things to do and places to eat in SF!
🚗 Getting There: Take US-101 North across the Golden Gate Bridge, then follow CA-1 and Panoramic Highway to the summit (~45 min by car). There’s no direct public transit to the top, but the Marin Transit Route 61 bus runs to the base on weekends.
⏰ ~45 minutes // ~30 miles

Half Moon Bay is an iconic coastal getaway south of San Francisco and one of the best day trips near San Francisco, famous for its dramatic cliffs and sandy beaches. (And with a hint of luxury). It’s ideal for a scenic drive, a visit to the pumpkin patch (in fall), or simply relaxing by the ocean. It’s also a great option for those wanting to enjoy a spa day at the world-class Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay.
Ps. Half Moon Bay is great for a day trip, but even better as a weekend getaway, so be sure to check out my full Half Moon Bay weekend guide w/ sample itinerary!
Known for: beautiful beaches, rugged cliffs, plant nurseries, and pumpkin patches
Thinking about turning this into a weekend trip instead? Check out my full Half Moon Bay weekend guide complete with all the best things to do, where to stay, and where to eat!

⏰ ~1 hour // ~44 miles

You guys obviously know I wasn’t going to make a list of day trips near San Francisco without including wine country. (If you’re a longtime reader, you’ll already know that Sonoma or Napa is where you can find me when I’m not traveling). Downtown Sonoma is a charming wine country town known for its cozy atmosphere, wine tasting rooms, and gourmet restaurants. It’s the perfect spot for a laid-back day trip into wine country, and one of the best day trips from San Francisco for food and wine lovers.
Known for: wine country, historic town square, and shops/galleries
🚗 Getting There: Drive north on US-101 to CA-37 East and then CA-121 North (~1 hour by car). No direct public transit from SF, so a rental car or rideshare is the way to go. You can also book a guided wine country tour from San Francisco that handles the driving for you.
⏰ ~1 hour // ~46 miles

You can’t have Downtown Sonoma without including Downtown Napa! Although don’t tell the locals that. They love to play up the rivalry between Sonoma and Napa when in reality, they’re both fantastic wine regions. Just with a different vibe + wine focus. Downtown Napa is one of my favorite places to spend the summer because there’s endless tasting rooms, shopping, and live concerts. There’s also a ton of trails that lead down to the river that my dog loves. It’s also got a touch of luxury, perfect for treating yourself to the perfect day trip from San Francisco!
Love wine country as much as I do? Don’t miss my complete first-timer’s guide to Napa Valley here!
Known for: wine country, world-class dining, scenic walks along the Napa River
Ps. Napa Valley is massive so that list barely covered it all. If you have more than a day to spend, don’t miss my complete first-timer’s guide and 3-day Napa Valley itinerary here!
🚗 Getting There: Drive north on US-101, then east on CA-37 to CA-29 North (~1 hour). VINE Bus Transit connects Napa to the Vallejo Ferry Terminal, and you can take the ferry from the SF Ferry Building to Vallejo for a scenic car-free option.
⏰ ~80 minutes // ~66 miles

Not necessarily as popular as some of the places on this list, but definitely one place that you should still check out is Bodega Bay. (My good friend lives here too so I love using it as an excuse to get away from the city for a weekend). If you’re looking for quieter, off-the-beaten-path day trips from San Francisco, Bodega Bay should be near the top of your list. Bodega Bay is a peaceful coastal town with rugged cliffs and a picturesque harbor. Famous for its seafood and role in The Birds, it offers a peaceful escape with charming beaches and scenic views.
Turning this into a weekend trip instead? Check out my complete weekend guide to Bodega Bay with the best places to stay, restaurants, things to do, and places to see!
Known for: ocean views, fresh seafood, and coastal hikes
Staying a few days in Bodega Bay? I put together a Bodega Bay weekend guide (w/ sample itinerary) complete with all of my favorite hotels, restaurants, and things to do and see!
🚗 Getting There: Head north on US-101, then west on CA-116 to Bodega Bay (~1 hour 20 minutes by car). There’s no direct public transit, so a rental car is your best option for this day trip.
⏰ ~80 minutes // ~74 miles

Ah quintessential California boardwalk vibes. Aka Santa Cruz! This one’s pretty well known, especially if you grew up in the area. It was basically where all the Bay Area kids spent their summers. Santa Cruz is a vibrant beach town known for its iconic boardwalk, surf culture, and laid-back atmosphere. It’s one of the best day trips from San Francisco for beach activities, hiking, or exploring quirky local shops.
Known for: the famous beach boardwalk, colorful houses of Capitola, and laid-back vibes
Turning a Santa Cruz day trip from San Francisco into an overnight? Click here for my full hotel review of Dream Inn Santa Cruz!
🚗 Getting There: Take either Highway 17 over the Santa Cruz Mountains (~1 hr 20 min) or the scenic Highway 1 South (~1 hr 30 min). Highway 17 is faster but winding, so take it slow if you’re not used to mountain roads.
⏰ ~90 minutes // ~74 miles

Ugh if I was rich, this is where I’d buy a cozy little A-frame to hide away. (Or I’d buy a mansion with a pool in Napa. But if I was rich, I’d just buy both). Guerneville is one of my favorite hidden gems in Sonoma County. It’s the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and small-town charm. Like, their one ice cream store in town is located inside a converted bank building. Guerneville is located right along the Russian River, making it one of the most popular summer day trips from San Francisco — especially for floating, kayaking, and redwood hikes.
Known for: Russian River, towering redwood forests, and small-town charm
Turning a Guerneville day trip from San Francisco into an overnight? Click here for my full hotel review of Dawn Ranch.
🚗 Getting There: Drive north on US-101 to Santa Rosa, then west on CA-116 into Guerneville (~1 hour 30 min). Sonoma County Transit bus routes connect Santa Rosa to Guerneville if you prefer public transit.
⏰ ~90 minutes // ~74 miles

Yes I know I’m obsessed with Napa so it’s only natural that another Napa Valley gem made it onto my list of day trips from San Francisco. But this one’s special I promise! Calistoga is a little town located at the very top of Napa, famous for its hot springs, luxury spas, and beautiful vineyards. It’s ideal for a day of relaxation and rejuvenation amidst stunning natural beauty. Have you ever had a mud bath? If not, then you gotta check out Calistoga asap! It’s one of the most unique and rejuvenating day trips from San Francisco you can take.
Known for: natural hot springs, wine country, and relaxation
🚗 Getting There: Drive north on US-101 or I-80 East to CA-29 North through Napa Valley (~1 hour 30 min). VINE Bus runs from Napa to Calistoga if you take the ferry from SF to Vallejo first.
⏰ ~2 hours // ~119 miles

And finally, we have the picturesque coastal city of Monterey, California. While it’s the furthest destination on the list, it’s still totally worth the day trip from San Francisco! You’ll just have to start a little bit more on the early side. Known for its rich maritime history and the iconic Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey boasts breathtaking coastlines, incredible wildlife viewing, and historic sites. It’s a fantastic spot for both relaxation and adventure.
Known for: the Monterey Bay Aquarium, whale watching, and ocean views
🚗 Getting There: Take US-101 South to CA-156 West to CA-1 South (~2 hours by car), or take the scenic Highway 1 the whole way. Amtrak’s Coast Starlight train stops in Salinas (nearby), or you can take a Greyhound bus from the Transbay Terminal.

And there you have it! All 12 of my favorite day trips from San Francisco. There’s obviously a lot more places to visit but these are definitely the top 12 that I visit time and time again. You can probably tell by my hair color in some of these photos haha.
But seriously, I obviously love San Francisco but sometimes you just need a quick escape from the city. And lucky for us, the Bay Area is surrounded by places like I mentioned above that are perfect for a quick getaway.
Whether you’re after coastal beauty, scenic hikes, a bit of wine country, or even some history, there’s something for everyone. These 12 day trips are easy to get to and pack a whole lot of fun. From Larkspur’s charm to Bodega Bay’s rugged coastline, it’s time to ditch the city for a bit and explore what’s just around the corner. Trust me, a day trip from San Francisco never disappoints!!!
