It’s not very often that I check out of a hotel and immediately start thinking about my next trip back. But every now and then, a place just sticks with me. As a former flight attendant and someone who travels constantly for work, I’ve stayed in more hotels than I can count, from budget stays to five-star luxury. And yet, nothing beats a boutique hotel that nails the trifecta of history, elegance, and charm.
Which brings me to Palazzo Velabro ✨
Nestled in the heart of Rome, this stunning hotel blends timeless architecture with thoughtful design, creating the kind of stay that feels both sophisticated and effortlessly comfortable. From its stylish suites to its unique amenities (a private cinema? Yes, please), it’s the perfect base for exploring the Eternal City.
Keep reading for my full hotel review on Palazzo Velabro, including how to get there, an inside look at the rooms, all the must-know amenities, and why this might just be your next favorite stay in Rome 👇

However, none of that impacts the integrity of my reviews. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Getting to Palazzo Velabro is easy, whether you’re arriving by plane, train, or car. I recently flew from Frankfurt to Rome so I took a taxi directly from Fiumicino Airport (FCO) to Palazzo Velabro which took about ~40 minutes (without traffic) and cost around 50€. For only $5 more, you can also book a private transfer to take you directly into the city center.
If private transport isn’t an option, you can easily hop on an $8 bus ride to Termini Station, then take a short ~10min taxi or uber to Palazzo Velabro.
If you’re arriving by train, Termini Station is just a 10-minute drive away. (This is what my mom did because she took the train down from Milan and it was super easy to get to the hotel from the train station by taxi). For those driving, the hotel is centrally located near the historic Velabro district, with plenty of parking options nearby. I’m pretty sure there’s a parking lot directly out front.
Via del Velabro isn’t just another charming Roman street; it’s the legendary birthplace of Rome itself. You can seriously feel the history as soon as you step outside of the lobby. This is where Romulus and Remus were supposedly set adrift in a basket, carried by the Tiber, before going on to found the city.
Fast forward to the 18th century and Palazzo Velabro was built right next to the historic Church of San Giorgio al Velabro. Then came 1960 when architect Luigi Moretti stepped in and gave the building a striking makeover, turning it into a residence that blends Rome’s rich past with a sleek, modern edge.
And then in early 2023, the residence reopened as a design hotel and that’s how Palazzo Velabro was born ✨
Today, this area is a perfect snapshot of Rome, where ancient legends and evolving architecture coexist in effortless style.
What’s your favorite thing about staying at a boutique hotel? For me, it’s always the rooms—there’s so much thought and detail packed into every corner. Palazzo Velabro is no exception. This design-forward hotel in Rome has 33 rooms across five floors, including 27 stylish suites with kitchens.
Step inside, and you’ll find a bold mix of vintage-inspired colors — sage green, brick pink, and cobalt blue all playing off one another. Fluted walls and mirrored tables flow through the space, a nice nod to Luigi Moretti’s architectural vision.
My mom and I spent three luxurious nights in the Garden View Prestige Suite. I’m seriously still dreaming about the balcony overlooking Palatine Hill and The Roman Forum. The suite itself was absolutely incredible. It came with a massive couch, multiple windows that let in a cool breeze, a full-sized kitchen, a plush king bed, and a balcony that led to the outside.
There was also a door that separated the living room from the bedroom which I really appreciated since I was working during the evenings. It was really nice being able to close the door and not disturb my mom (and vise versa). It’s also great for jet lag if you are up in the middle of the night and your partner is dead asleep lol.
I’ll be honest, boutique hotel amenities matter to me. I’m way past the age of tolerating discomfort while traveling, but they’re usually not my top priority. Location and design always come first, but let’s be real, the right amenities can make a stay feel effortlessly luxurious. And that’s exactly what Palazzo Velabro gets right.
It keeps things classic yet elevated, with a 24-hour front desk for anything you need, a well-equipped fitness gym to stay on track, and a private cinema for a cozy movie night. Yes, you heard that correct. They have their own movie theater called Cinema Velabro where you can watch movies with popcorn and drinks during your stay. They usually offer 3-4 showings throughout the day with plenty of American movies to choose from.
There’s also a sleek meeting space if you need to mix business with pleasure, and the best part? It’s dog-friendly, so your four-legged travel buddy is welcome too.
If only 🥯 the beagle could travel internationally 😭
Palazzo Velabro keeps dining simple yet sophisticated. Guests have two main options — enjoying a meal at the hotel’s fantastic onsite restaurant or opting for the convenience of room service. Both bring a mix of quality and flavor, and I’ll break them down in more detail below (because yes, I indulged in both because who would ever pass up breakfast in bed)🍴
Don’t feel like getting up or getting dressed just yet? No problem! You can have a beautifully curated breakfast delivered straight to your room. Think fresh pastries, perfectly brewed coffee, and a spread of Italian classics — all enjoyed from the comfort of your stylish suite. It’s the perfect way to start the day, especially if you’re not quite ready to leave those crisp hotel sheets just yet.
They also have a delicious restaurant onsite, Apicio 16, serves up a refined yet cozy dining experience with a focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients and Italian flavors done right. Whether you’re starting your day with a leisurely breakfast or winding down with a beautifully crafted meal, the ambiance is just as good as the food.
And if you’re in the mood for a cocktail, you can take a seat at the bar or head to the garden terrace to enjoy your Aperol Spritz in a relaxed setting. Or, you can do what I did and sip your drink outside while taking in the stunning view of the Arco di Giano (Arch of Janus).
There’s just something about enjoying a perfectly mixed cocktail with a side of ancient Roman history that makes the experience even better 🍊🍸
It’s crazy to think that this was my first time in Rome since I’ve been visiting family in Milan annually ever since I was a kid. I’m sad though because how will any future trips to Rome live up to this one unless I stay at Palazzo Velabro again?
Palazzo Velabro is the kind of place that perfectly balances history, design, and comfort, making it an ideal home base for your Roman getaway. With its stylish suites, thoughtful amenities, and unbeatable location in the heart of the city, it offers a seamless blend of old-world charm and modern luxury.
Whether you’re here to explore ancient ruins, indulge in Italian cuisine, or simply soak in the atmosphere, Palazzo Velabro seriously makes every moment feel effortlessly special.
