It’s crazy that a blog post like this is still relevant with TikTok taking over, but I secretly hope the trend of snapping photos never fades. There’s just something so fascinating about seeing how different each human eye captures the world. Even if you’re not all about chasing the perfect Instagram shot (totally fine if you are, because that’s the point of this post), you’ll still want to know where the most Instagrammable places in Malta are. From crystal-clear waters to ancient cities that look straight out of a movie, this island is packed with stunning Malta Instagram spots that you won’t want to miss 🇲🇹.
Malta was one of the first places I traveled to since becoming a part time travel blogger so I went around the whole island making sure I got “the perfect shot”. Which is funny because most days, I’d rather be behind the camera than in front of it. But hey, that just gives me the perfect excuse to share all the best spots and top Instagram-worthy locations in Malta with you. So let’s get into it 👇
This site contains affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you make a purchase through them (which will likely go towards overpriced airport wine or buying my dog more unnecessary toys). However, none of that impacts the integrity of my reviews. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
If you’re short on time, here are my top boutique hotel picks in Malta (including where I personally stayed when I visited):
You might already be in Malta and on the hunt for places to take photos but if you’re still in the early stages of planning your trip, then you might want to know where the island of Malta is actually located. It’s tiny AF so it’s easy to miss on the map! I know I had to zoom in 10x on Google Maps before I actually found it haha.
Malta is a small island nation in the Mediterranean Sea, located south of Italy and east of Tunisia. It’s known for its rich history, stunning coastlines, and a unique blend of European and North African influences.
Malta actually consists of three main islands: Malta, Gozo, and Comino. And each island has its own unique character.
Basically, Malta’s got a little something for everyone, whether you’re into history, beach-hopping, or just soaking up that warm Mediterranean magic.
Malta is one of those places that can be visited any time of year, which is why so many Brits flock south for the winter, lol. For the best photography and most Instagrammable places in Malta, visit in spring (March–May) or early fall (September–October), when the crowds are thinner and the lighting is pure magic. Sunrises at the Blue Lagoon and golden-hour shots in Gozo are absolute perfection. Plus, you won’t be sweating through your outfit while trying to get that flawless Valletta backdrop. I visited in early June and it felt like having the whole country to myself.
Here’s an interactive map of all of the best photo spots in Malta I’ll be discussing!
As I mentioned before, Malta Instagram spots can be found across the three main islands. While there are plenty of amazing photo spots on each one, let’s keep it simple and focus on the best spots for photos on the main island, including places like Valletta, Sliema, St. Julian’s, Mdina, and more.
I promise I’ll get to the more well-known Malta photo spots in a second but I want to start with Għajn Tuffieħa because my jaw dropped to the floor when I saw this place. It’s also the furthest location from Valletta so I wanted to cover it first in case you don’t finish reading this entire post. Għajn Tuffieħa is one of Malta’s hidden beach treasures, and let’s just say, it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled upon paradise.
Tucked away in the north of the island, this stunning bay is known for its golden sand, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic cliffs that frame the beach perfectly. It’s definitely quieter here than some of the more popular spots, so you can actually unwind without fighting for space. (You know I love my rugged landscapes too which is why I fell in love with The Algarve in Portugal).
Whether you’re up for a swim, a scenic walk up to the nearby Għajn Tuffieħa Tower, or just lounging in the sun, this beach is a peaceful Malta photo spot that offers a break from the crowds. Għajn Tuffieħa is also located near Popeye Village and Anchor Bay — two other Malta photo spots perfect for capturing Instagram photos undisturbed.
Looking for a killer view in Malta? Head to the Upper Barrakka and Lower Barrakka Gardens in Valletta. Perched on a cliff, this spot gives you a stunning bird’s-eye view of the Grand Harbour, the Three Cities, and all the ships sailing in and out. Originally a private getaway for the Knights of St. John (yep, the OG knights), it’s now open to the public and a perfect place to relax among fountains, statues, and shady trees. Bonus: catch the cannon salute at noon or 4 PM — because who doesn’t want to see cannons go off like it’s the 1600s?
Pro tip: Go around sunrise to have the gardens all to yourself.
Not to be confused with The Blue Lagoon (which we’ll definitely get to later), The Blue Grotto is one of Malta’s Instagram spots you won’t want to miss. Located on the southern coast, this sea cave is famous for its striking, vibrant blue waters, illuminated by sunlight filtering through the water and reflecting off the cave’s limestone walls.
If you rented a car then it’s easy to plug The Blue Grotto into Google Maps. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a car when I visited but the bus system in Malta is super easy. Take bus route 74 or 201 from Valletta to the Wied iz-Zurrieq area, which is the closest stop to the grotto. Once you get off at the bus terminal, it’s a short walk to the dock where you can catch a boat tour that takes you directly to the grotto or you can admire the view from above like I did.
Nothing gets my little photography heart going like a cute, narrow, European street. Which is why Triq Sant’Orsla is such a hidden gem in the heart of Valletta, Malta’s capital which also happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This adorably quaint street, named after St. Ursula, offers a glimpse into the city’s rich history and traditional architecture. As you wander down this charming road, you’ll pass by narrow alleys, colorful Maltese balconies, and beautiful stone buildings that date back centuries. While it’s not as bustling as the main streets, Triq Sant’Orsla provides a quieter, more authentic experience of Valletta, perfect for those looking to escape the crowds.
Right around the corner from St. Ursula street is a cute side path called Battery Street. You basically get to hit up two amazing photo spots within 10 feet of each other. Battery Street itself is a narrow, winding road with a rich military past. Named after the nearby Fort St. Elmo, the street once housed artillery batteries that protected the city from invaders. Today however, Battery Street offers a quieter, more off-the-beaten-path experience compared to the bustling main streets of Valletta. As you stroll down, you’ll pass by beautiful old buildings, some of which date back to the 16th century, with remnants of Malta’s military heritage still visible. Also, all of the balconies in Malta are 😍😍😍 but especially here.
The street also offers stunning views of the Grand Harbour, making it a great spot to take your photos for Instagram without the crowds.
So you know that Valletta is the capital but Sliema was actually one of my favorite parts of Malta (and where I stayed for 5 nights). There are so many great Instagram photo spots in Sliema too. It’s located right across the water from Valletta and there’s even a short 15 minute ferry that takes you from one place to the other. I actually chose to walk most of the time since it’s a beautiful walk along the ocean but the two towns are seriously so close to each other.
Tucked away in Sliema, the Roman Baths are one of the most Instagrammable places in Malta, offering a fascinating glimpse into the island’s ancient past. These well-preserved ruins date back to the Roman period and were once used as public baths, a vital part of daily life in ancient times. Visitors can explore the remnants of the bathhouse, including the changing rooms, pools, and intricate mosaic floors.
Pro tip – come at sunset to capture some of the golden hour light and for some of the best views of the ocean 🌊
Okay this one might be kind of a weird pick for Malta Instagram spots because it’s a hotel but I swear the views from the rooftop pool are epic. Ax The Victoria is the hotel that I stayed at for 5 nights and absolutely loved it. I spent most mornings just laying around the pool and getting to see all of Malta from above. Everyone raves about the Embassy Suites in Valletta, which is also beautiful of course, but doesn’t have as epic of an infinity pool as AX The Victoria Hotel.
All of Malta’s streets are basically a photographer’s jackpot, but especially in Sliema. Can you tell by now that I loved my time in Sliema? Wander away from the busy promenade, and you’ll stumble into quiet little streets lined with old-school townhouses, each rocking a ridiculously photogenic, brightly colored door. I’m talking bold blues, fiery reds, and sunshine yellows that are so colorful I’m not even tempted to crank up the saturation when I edit my photos. You can basically walk around anywhere in Sliema and get a great shot for Instagram.
Mdina Fortress, also known as the “Silent City,” is a dream for Game of Thrones, Instagram, and photography lovers. This ancient walled city sits atop a hill, offering stunning panoramic views and a maze of narrow, honey-colored alleyways that feel straight out of a medieval fairytale. Every corner is a picture-perfect blend of Baroque architecture, charming doorways, and soft golden light that hits just right. Mdina is definitely done of the best places in Malta for photography so you can’t go wrong wandering down any of the little alleys here.
Ah the famous blue door in Mdina. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen this freakin blue door pop up on my social media. And honestly, I think it’s a little overhyped but maybe it’s just because I’d rather photograph the ocean than a door haha. To be fair, Malta’s got some of the prettiest doors I’ve ever seen though.
And last but not least for Malta Instagram spots, I have to mention Balluta Bay Beach in Saint Julian’s but not because it’s my favorite beach (spoiler: it’s not), but because it’s super popular and packed with hotel options. It gets insanely busy in summer, but if you don’t want to drive all over Malta, it’s a solid choice. Balluta Bay beach is great for sunbathing and swimming, plus you’ve got endless restaurants, nightlife, and clubs just steps away, so at least you won’t have to wander far for a post-beach cocktail.
I’m sure you’re exhausted from running around all over Malta but drink some coffee because we’re about to cover one of the best places in Malta for photography and Instagram shots. And that’s Comino Island 🌊🏝️🐠☀️
Comino Island is a tiny slice of paradise between Malta and Gozo, best known for its insanely blue waters at the famous Blue Lagoon. With no cars, barely any residents, and rugged coastline perfect for exploring, it’s the ultimate spot for photography, swimming, snorkeling, and pretending you’ve escaped to a deserted island.
I’m gonna assume the Blue Lagoon is what made you want to come to Malta in the first place. If it’s not, that’s impressive because it sure as hell is the reason I booked a flight last minute to travel 3,000 miles across the world. The Blue Lagoon is THE poster child of Malta’s postcard-perfect spots. It’s basically nature’s infinity pool which is why it’s one of the most Instagrammable places in Malta.
Blue Lagoon’s less-famous (but arguably cooler) sibling, Crystal Lagoon is where you go when you want those same jaw-dropping turquoise waters without the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds. It’s only accessible by boat or a solid cliff jump if you’re feeling brave, and the underwater caves make it a dream for snorkeling and diving.
This little hidden cove is Comino’s best-kept secret, perfect for when you need a break from the Blue Lagoon madness. Tucked away from the main tourist trail, it’s a peaceful, rocky inlet with crystal-clear water — ideal for a quiet photoshoot, a relaxing swim, a picnic, or just pretending you’re in a private island fantasy.
We’ve made it to the final island in Malta — Gozo island! You can think of Gozo Island as Malta’s quieter, more relaxed sibling, offering stunning landscapes, charming villages, and crystal-clear waters. It’s perfect for those who want to escape the crowds and dive into nature, with highlights like the Azure Window ruins, scenic coastal hikes, and peaceful beaches. Plus, the vibe is way more laid-back, making it the perfect place for an uninterrupted photo shoot 📸
Sadly, I didn’t get to spend too much time on Gozo because I had to work. I was only able to do a day trip but am already counting down the days until I can get back to this part of the world. So I only have two photo spots to share but I promise they’re the best and most Instagrammable spots in Gozo, Malta.
If you’re looking for a spot that screams hidden gem, Tal-Mixta Cave has got your back. This place reminded me soooo much of Makua Cave in Oahu before they closed it to the public 😭
Tal-Mixta Cave offers insane views of Gozo’s rugged coastline and the Mediterranean, plus the hike to get there is like a mini adventure. Trust me, it’s the perfect place to catch a sunset, and the photos? 10/10.
Welcome to the OG natural spa 🛁
The Xwejni Salt Pans (aka the Gozo salt pans) are a crazy-cool sight where salt is still harvested the old-school way. The patterns of the salt flats against the blue sea are ridiculously Instagrammable, and it’s such a peaceful spot to just sit back and take in the beauty of Gozo’s coastline. Plus, if you’re into unique souvenirs, you can swipe up some Gozo salt to take home with you.
Okay, even if you’re not a travel blogger, booking a photoshoot in Malta is such a vibe.
It’s the perfect way to get some gorgeous shots without stressing over the self-timer or asking strangers to take your pic (we’ve all been there). It’s a great move for couples who want a cool keepsake from their trip or families looking for photos that actually look like they were taken on vacation, not in a random mall.
Plus, many photographers will take you to hidden gems and show you the Malta best photo spots, while also sharing the inside scoop on the best local restaurants.
I’m all about this photography experience from GetYourGuide. You can also check out Airbnb Experiences which I’ve used before. I’ve honestly done shoots in tons of places, and am always so happy with how the pics turn out!
And there you have it—some of the best Malta photo spots that will take your Instagram game to the next level! Are you exhausted yet from running around with your camera?? Or was that just me 😂
Whether you’re chasing crystal-clear waters, ancient architecture, or hidden gems, Malta has a little bit of everything to make your feed pop. From the iconic top Malta Instagram spots like the Blue Lagoon to the quieter, picturesque corners of Gozo, you’ll never run out of beautiful places to capture. So, grab your camera, hit these spots, and start collecting memories in one of the most photogenic destinations in the Mediterranean!
