It probably goes without saying but… I moonlight as a travel blogger in my free time (thanks for reading my blog) but work full-time in tech. As part of the job, I’m basically required to constantly explore new places. Whenever I’m home in San Francisco, if I don’t escape the city at least once a month, I start to seriously go insane. But thankfully due to it’s location, San Francisco makes it easy to grab a rental car and hit the road for an easy and fun getaway. And I get to be back in my own bed at night? Seriously, what a win.

Pacifica, California is a cute little coastal town just south of San Francisco. They’re known for having stunning beaches, lotsa surfers, and a ton of great hiking trails. (My dad and I love stopping in Pacifica sometimes on our way to SFO). The weather can be hit or miss sometimes but when the sun comes out, it’s seriously gorgeous.

(It’s also THE place to move to if you’re in your early 30s and just starting a family). It’s also really convenient to get to Larkspur from the San Francisco ferry building, which is what makes it such an easy and picturesque day trip from San Francisco.

I view Tiburon as pretty similar to Larkspur, but slightly better views and more upscale dining options. Tiburon is perfect for a relaxing afternoon with a stroll along the waterfront or a ferry ride to Angel Island.

A paradise for nature lovers, Mount Tamalpais aka Mt. Tam for short, is known for having scenic hiking trails with panoramic views of the Bay Area. It’s a short drive north for a day of outdoor adventure and natural beauty. If you visit though, you HAVE to stay for sunset to watch Karl the fog creep in over the bay. It’s seriously one of the most beautiful views we have in the Bay Area.

It’s ideal for a scenic drive, a visit to the pumpkin patch (in fall), or simply relaxing by the ocean. It’s also a great option for those wanting to enjoy a spa day at the world-class Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay.

(If you’re a longtime reader, you’ll already know that Sonoma or Napa is where you can find me when I’m not traveling). Downtown Sonoma is a charming wine country town known for its cozy atmosphere, wine tasting rooms, and gourmet restaurants. It’s the perfect spot for a laid-back day trip into one of California’s many wine regions.

- Stroll around Sonoma Plaza
- Wine tasting at local vineyards (Flowers, Lynmar, J Vineyards are some of my Sonoma favs)
- Go for a ride on Sonoma TrainTown Railroad
- Book a relaxing spa day at The Lodge or Fairmont Sonoma via Resortpass

- the girl & the fig for French country fare, delicious wines, and a big outdoor patio (this is usually our go-to spot if we’re ever in Sonoma. The duck leg is a MUST).

You can’t have Downtown Sonoma without including Downtown Napa! Although don’t tell the locals that. They love to play up the rivalry between Sonoma and Napa when in reality, they’re both fantastic wine regions. Just with a different vibe + wine focus. Downtown Napa is one of my favorite places to spend the summer because there’s endless tasting rooms, shopping, and live concerts. There’s also a ton of trails that lead down to the river that my dog loves. It’s also got a touch of luxury, perfect for treating yourself to the perfect day trip from San Francisco!

Not necessarily as popular as some of the places on this list, but definitely one place that you should still check out is Bodega Bay. (My good friend lives here too so I love using it as an excuse to get away from the city for a weekend). Bodega Bay is a peaceful coastal town with rugged cliffs and a picturesque harbor. Famous for its seafood and role in The Birds, it offers a peaceful escape with charming beaches and scenic views.

It’s one of the best day trips near San Francisco for beach activities, hiking, or exploring quirky local shops.

Ugh if I was rich, this is where I’d buy a cozy little A-frame to hide away. (Or I’d buy a mansion with a pool in Napa. But if I was rich, I’d just buy both). Guerneville is one of my favorite hidden gems in Sonoma County. It’s the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and small-town charm. Like, their one ice cream store in town is located inside a converted bank building. Guerneville is located right along the Russian River so it’s a popular place to visit during a summer day trip from San Francisco!

Calistoga is a little town located at the very top of Napa, famous for its hot springs, luxury spas, and beautiful vineyards. It’s ideal for a day of relaxation and rejuvenation amidst stunning natural beauty. Have you ever had a mud bath? If not, then you gotta check out Calistoga asap!

#4. A Nature Lover’s Day Trip From San Francisco: Mount Tamalpais

A paradise for nature lovers, Mount Tamalpais aka Mt. Tam for short, is known for having scenic hiking trails with panoramic views of the Bay Area. It’s a short drive north for a day of outdoor adventure and natural beauty. If you visit though, you HAVE to stay for sunset to watch Karl the fog creep in over the bay. It’s seriously one of the most beautiful views we have in the Bay Area.

- Hike the ~9 mile Dipsea Trail for more of a challenge

- Most of the restaurants are down the mountain in Mill Valley so I’d suggest Sol Food (extremely good Puerto Rican cuisine) and Bungalow 44 (New American).
#5. A Popular Bay Area Day Trip: Half Moon Bay

Half Moon Bay is an iconic coastal getaway south of San Francisco and one of the best day trips near San Francisco, famous for its dramatic cliffs and sandy beaches. (And with a hint of luxury). It’s ideal for a scenic drive, a visit to the pumpkin patch (in fall), or simply relaxing by the ocean. It’s also a great option for those wanting to enjoy a spa day at the world-class Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay.

- KNOWN FOR: Beautiful beaches, rugged cliffs, plant nurseries, and pumpkin patches

- Visit Mavericks Beach to watch some of the world’s most impressive surf

- Sam’s Chowder House for famous clam chowder, lobster rolls, and stunning ocean views (try to make reservations in advance or you might find yourself waiting as it’s a pretty popular spot in HMB).

#6. A Relaxing Day Trip Near San Francisco: Downtown Sonoma

You guys obviously know I wasn’t going to make a list of day trips near San Francisco without including wine country. (If you’re a longtime reader, you’ll already know that Sonoma or Napa is where you can find me when I’m not traveling). Downtown Sonoma is a charming wine country town known for its cozy atmosphere, wine tasting rooms, and gourmet restaurants. It’s the perfect spot for a laid-back day trip into one of California’s many wine regions.

- KNOWN FOR: Wine country, historic town square, and shops/galleries
- THINGS TO DO:
- Stroll around Sonoma Plaza
- Wine tasting at local vineyards (Flowers, Lynmar, J Vineyards are some of my Sonoma favs)
- Go for a ride on Sonoma TrainTown Railroad
- Book a relaxing spa day at The Lodge or Fairmont Sonoma via Resortpass
- PLACES TO EAT:
- the girl & the fig for French country fare, delicious wines, and a big outdoor patio (this is usually our go-to spot if we’re ever in Sonoma. The duck leg is a MUST).
- El Dorado Kitchen for elevated California classics
- Sunflower Caffé for locally-sourced brunch and drinks
#7. A Wine Country Day Trip from San Francisco: Downtown Napa

You can’t have Downtown Sonoma without including Downtown Napa! Although don’t tell the locals that. They love to play up the rivalry between Sonoma and Napa when in reality, they’re both fantastic wine regions. Just with a different vibe + wine focus. Downtown Napa is one of my favorite places to spend the summer because there’s endless tasting rooms, shopping, and live concerts. There’s also a ton of trails that lead down to the river that my dog loves. It’s also got a touch of luxury, perfect for treating yourself to the perfect day trip from San Francisco!

- Slanted Door Napa for inventine Vietnamese cuisine (one of our favs, we visit the SF location pretty often and we love that they’re pet-friendly)
- RH Yountville for the most beautifully designed restaurant you’ll ever see
- Brasswood Bar + Kitchen for New American staples (you HAVE to order “the cheese” off the secret menu).

#8. A Peaceful Coastal Day Trip from San Francisco: Bodega Bay

Not necessarily as popular as some of the places on this list, but definitely one place that you should still check out is Bodega Bay. (My good friend lives here too so I love using it as an excuse to get away from the city for a weekend). Bodega Bay is a peaceful coastal town with rugged cliffs and a picturesque harbor. Famous for its seafood and role in The Birds, it offers a peaceful escape with charming beaches and scenic views.

- THINGS TO DO:
- Visit Bodega Head for panoramic views of the Pacific
- Relax on the shores of Doran Beach

- Fishetarian Fish Market for fresh seafood along the water (we eat here everytime we take a day trip up to Bodega Bay. They have a bunch of big outdoor tables and it’s the perfect spot to fuel up before a day of wine tasting in Sonoma).
- The Tides Wharf & Restaurant for a popular and casual meal overlooking Bodega Bay
- The Bay View Restaurant & Lounge for seasonal Italian (located at The Inn at the Tides)
- Diekmann’s Bay Store, technically a grocery store but they make fresh sandwiches, pizza, and pastas which make for great take-away to go eat on the beach
#9. A Classic Beach Town Day Trip from San Francisco: Santa Cruz

Ah quintessential California boardwalk vibes. Aka Santa Cruz! This one’s pretty well known, especially if you grew up in the area. It was basically where all the Bay Area kids spent their summers. Santa Cruz is a vibrant beach town known for its iconic boardwalk, surf culture, and laid-back atmosphere. It’s one of the best day trips near San Francisco for beach activities, hiking, or exploring quirky local shops.

#10. A Riverfront Day Trip from San Francisco: Guerneville

Ugh if I was rich, this is where I’d buy a cozy little A-frame to hide away. (Or I’d buy a mansion with a pool in Napa. But if I was rich, I’d just buy both). Guerneville is one of my favorite hidden gems in Sonoma County. It’s the perfect blend of outdoor adventure and small-town charm. Like, their one ice cream store in town is located inside a converted bank building. Guerneville is located right along the Russian River so it’s a popular place to visit during a summer day trip from San Francisco!

Yes I know I’m obsessed with Napa so it’s only natural that another Napa Valley gem made it onto my list of day trips from San Francisco. But this one’s special I promise! Calistoga is a little town located at the very top of Napa, famous for its hot springs, luxury spas, and beautiful vineyards. It’s ideal for a day of relaxation and rejuvenation amidst stunning natural beauty. Have you ever had a mud bath? If not, then you gotta check out Calistoga asap!

- KNOWN FOR: Natural hot springs, wine country, and relaxation
- THINGS TO DO:
- Relax in natural hot springs and experience a mud bath (I recommend Calistoga Spa Hot Springs and/or Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs)

- Go for a hike along the Oat Hill Mine Trail

#12. A Pet and Family-Friendly Day Trip from San Francisco: Monterey

And finally, we have the picturesque coastal city of Monterey, California. While it’s the furthest destination on the list, it’s still totally worth the day trip from San Francisco! You’ll just have to start a little bit more on the early side. Known for its rich maritime history and the iconic Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey boasts breathtaking coastlines, incredible wildlife viewing, and historic sites. It’s a fantastic spot for both relaxation and adventure.

And there you have it! All 12 of my favorite day trips from San Francisco. There’s obviously a lot more places to visit but these are definitely the top 12 that I visit time and time again. You can probably tell by my hair color in some of these photos haha.
But seriously, I obviously love San Francisco but sometimes you just need a quick escape from the city. And lucky for us, the Bay Area is surrounded by places like I mentioned above that are perfect for a quick getaway.
Whether you’re after coastal beauty, scenic hikes, a bit of wine country, or even some history, there’s something for everyone. These 12 day trips are easy to get to and pack a whole lot of fun. From Larkspur’s charm to Bodega Bay’s rugged coastline, it’s time to ditch the city for a bit and explore what’s just around the corner. Trust me, a day trip from San Francisco never disappoints!!!
