Yes, I know. Frankfurt Germany is probably not the first place that comes to mind when someone says “hey want to go to Europe?”. I get it. But it’s a major hub for connecting flights from the US to most of Europe and even Africa and The Middle East. Which is why I found myself in the city of Frankfurt for one day earlier this year before catching my connecting flight to Egypt. So I thought well, why not explore all this city has to offer during my one day (literally 24 hours) in Frankfurt. You might be wondering the same thing since you landed on this post.
To help you plan the best 1-day itinerary in Frankfurt, check out this article (w/ a sample itinerary at the bottom). I know one day in Frankfurt isn’t a whole lotta time which is why I want to help make things easier with this fast-paced and efficient travel guide to spending one day in Frankfurt. This blog post breaks down all the logistics for getting in/out of Frankfurt, a short list of top hotels for your overnight stay, and all of the best activities, things to do, and places to see in your one day journey in the financial hub of Germany 🇩🇪
All accompanied by a sample itinerary I’ve personally vetted, tested, and approved 😊
This site contains affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you make a purchase through them (which will likely go towards overpriced airport wine or buying my dog more unnecessary toys). However, none of that impacts the integrity of my reviews. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Short on Time? Here Are My Top Picks for the Best Hotels for One Day in Frankfurt:
Yes, I’ll admit. A 1 day Frankfurt itinerary is pretty ambitious, even by my standards, since you know that Discover Over There specializes in fast-paced travel and efficient itineraries.
But YES! I promise, spending a layover or one day in Frankfurt is definitely enough to see the city’s top sights — thanks to its really walkable layout and efficient transport, you can pack in a ton without feeling rushed. With this itinerary that I personally experienced, you’ll hit all the best things to see in Frankfurt in one day, from the historic charm of Römerberg to the panoramic views at Main Tower to the stunning Frankfurt Cathedral. There’s also so many underrated restaurants and cute cocktail bars that people often overlook in favor of other German cities like Munich. Whether you’re here on a layover or a quick city break, this one day in Frankfurt plan ensures you experience the city’s highlights, drink some delicious apple wine, and maybe even squeeze in a pretzel or frankfurter alongside a riverside stroll 🥨
Before I dive in, you’re probably wondering where the heck the city of Frankfurt is? And not just the airport.
Frankfurt is smack dab in the middle of Germany, making it a major travel hub. The city itself straddles the Main River. Back in the day, the Roman Empire had its sights on this spot, but fast forward a few centuries and it’s now a financial powerhouse, home to the European Central Bank. (There’s even a massive freestanding Euro sculpture in the center of town. They love their money here lol).
Whether you’re here for business or just squeezing in a Frankfurt day trip before heading elsewhere, this city is seriously so easy to explore.
The city itself is just a quick 15-minute train or taxi ride from the Frankfurt airport (FRA), so it’s perfect for a layover adventure or a quick stop on your trip. The easiest ways to get from the airport to the city center are by:
🚗 Uber is probably the most convenient option with uber prices ranging from €30 to €35. The journey usually takes around ~20 minutes without traffic.
🚕 Typically, the Frankfurt Airport to city center taxi price ranges from €35 to €45, depending on traffic levels and type of vehicle. The journey usually takes around ~20 minutes without traffic.
🚃 Frankfurt Airport has two train stations: one for regional trains and one for long-distance travel. To reach the city center, take the S8 or S9 S-Bahn from the regional station in Terminal 1. It’s a 15-20 minute ride with trains every 10-15 minutes. A one-way ticket costs €6.30 for adults and €3.70 for kids (6-14). Buy tickets at airport kiosks, vending machines, or via the RMV app.
Since this is only a 1-day Frankfurt itinerary, I’d recommend staying in the city center to make the most of your limited time. Being centrally located means you won’t waste precious hours on transport and can easily walk to key attractions, restaurants, and shops, making your experience far more efficient and enjoyable.
I was originally debating between making the “trek” to the city center or just staying at the airport, but when I saw that hotels were basically the same price I was like that’s dumb. I’d rather be in the heart of the city then. Especially since Frankfurt is only ~15 minutes away from the airport, unlike in most cities it’s quite a trek to get from the airport to the actual city center. So these are my top picks for boutique hotels in the city center of Frankfurt including the Moxy which is where I stayed:
Ps. To learn more about how I travel the world for *nearly* free – check out my complete strategy for maximizing credit card points and miles.
Getting around Frankfurt in one day is super easy. This city is seriously so compact, efficient, and practically built for a quick visit. It’s like the Germans are super efficient or something who knew. Jk I definitely knew since I’ve weirdly had a handful of German bosses over the years. There’s nothing I appreciate more than being on time and being direct.
Most of the key spots in this one day in Frankfurt itinerary are walkable, which is what I did. But if your feet need a break, the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, and trams will get you anywhere fast.
An RMV day ticket covers all public transport, making it easy to hop between sights without overthinking it.
Whether you’re strolling through Römerberg, walking across the beautiful Eiserner Steg footbridge, or zipping across the Main River while exploring Frankfurt, it’s super easy to get around during your one day Frankfurt itinerary.
Okay enough of the logistics. How will you actually spend your one day in Frankfurt? Per usual, it’s going to be an action-packed day so make sure to grab a free bottle of water from the Moxy and let’s head out to explore the best that Frankfurt has to offer in this 24 hour Frankfurt itinerary which was tested and approved by yours truly 👇
Short on time? Here’s a quick look at your morning itinerary for one day in Frankfurt!
Given that you only have one day in Frankfurt, then I’d recommend taking advantage of your jetlag and watching the sunrise from Eiserner Steg Footbridge. If you’re not an early bird, that’s fine too. You can skip this part and go straight to grabbing a delicious cappcuccino from Wacker’s Kaffee ☕️
Wacker’s Kaffee is a beloved, family-run coffee institution in Frankfurt, serving top-quality brews since 1914. There’s a couple locations but I chose the one closest to Römerberg because it was close to where my walking tour was going to start. I love looking for coffee shops whenever I travel and Wacker’s definitely fit the bill. You can even buy beans by the bag to take home. Plus, it was filled with locals enjoying their morning coffee or grabbing a pastry to go before school so you know it’s not a tourist trap.
Located near the city center, this cozy café is a local favorite for its rich, expertly roasted coffee and charming old-school atmosphere.
As part of your one day Frankfurt itinerary and after you’ve fueled up, I’d recommend joining this really wonderful $27/person walking tour around the heart of Frankfurt. Again, this city is walkable so you can basically see all the sights in under 2 hours which is perfect. Longer walking tours bore me which is why I had a really good experience during this one.
Our tour group was small and only had about 5 people that day which was great. It allowed everyone to ask questions and not necessarily follow a “set” route. This might be different for you depending on when you go but this was generally one of more laid back tours I went on. And you can’t beat the value for money here.
The tour started in Römer and Römerplatz, Frankfurt’s historic City Hall and old town square since 1405. From there, we visited New Altstadt, the Book Burning Memorial, and Alt Nikolai Church, a Gothic church dating back to 1290. We also made a stop at House Wertheim, the only inner-city half-timbered house to survive World War II. Germany obviously has a TON of history so we also got to revisit some of it’s darker history at Stolpersteine (Stumble Stones), a unique memorial honoring victims of the Nazi regime, the Jewish Holocaust Memorial Wall, the Medieval Jewish Cemetery, and the Jewish Ghetto Wall, originally part of the city’s defenses in 1180 and later enclosing the Jewish ghetto ✡️
I know our tour guide looks a bit tired but I swear he was amazing. Overall it was a great tour and it ended promptly at 1pm at Kleinmarkthalle (Frankfurt’s indoor market) just in time for lunch 🥨🌭🍎🍳
Short on time? Here’s a quick look at your afternoon itinerary for one day in Frankfurt!
Since you’re exploring Frankfurt in one day, a stop at Kleinmarkthalle is a must. Kleinmarkthalle is Frankfurt’s bustling market, a paradise for food lovers with over 60 stalls offering fresh produce, gourmet delicacies, international specialties, and local favorites. From freshly baked bread and artisan cheeses to fine wines and Frankfurt’s famous Grüne Soße (Green Sauce), it’s the perfect spot to grab a bite or shop for high-quality ingredients.
After you’ve filled up on the delicious goodies from , you’re going to walk across either bridge (Eiserner Steg or Alte Brücke) to taste Frankfurt’s famous Apfelwein aka apple wine at Apfelweinkontor 🍎
Half apple winery, half ceramic studio — Apfelweinkontor is the go-to spot in Frankfurt for all things Apfelwein (aka German apple cider). This little gem is packed with locally made ciders, from the classic stuff to funky small-batch blends you won’t find anywhere else. Not sure what to get? Tastings are basically free as long as you buy a bottle of wine to take home with you (no more than 10 euros). The staff knows their apples and will hook you up with the perfect bottle.
The coolest part about Apfelweinkontor was also that it’s part ceramic studio. The owner (and wine maker) handles everything wine related while his business partner (I didn’t catch her name) hand paints all of the ceramics and jugs in the store. When I went, she was literally sitting in a corner hand-painting all the designs. It was mesmerizing. They had jugs in all sizes and apparently they’re actually called “Bembel’s” in German.
Whether you’re a hardcore cider fan or just want to bring home a taste of Frankfurt, this place is a must-visit during your one day in Frankfurt.
Now that you’re tipsy on Apfelwein, it’s the perfect time to wind down for the evening with a $17 sunset Main River cruise. I seriously can’t get over how cheap the activities are here compared to anywhere else I travel to.
A Main River cruise is one of the best ways to see Frankfurt’s skyline while kicking back and enjoying the city from the water. Whether you opt for a short 1-hour sightseeing tour or a longer trip past charming riverside villages, you’ll get panoramic views from the River Main of the city’s mix of sleek skyscrapers and historic landmarks. Keep reading to learn more about Frankfurt’s funny nickname which might make sense once you see all the buildings during your cruise. Many cruises offer commentary, so you’ll learn a bit about Frankfurt as you sail. You definitely need to book the sunset experience as the skyline looks incredible from the river.
Short on time? Here’s a quick look at your evening itinerary for one day in Frankfurt!
Well now let’s wrap up your one day Frankfurt itinerary with this perfect evening itinerary. After the cruise, you’ll start with expertly crafted cocktails at The Tiny Cup, a cozy bar that’s earned a spot on the World’s 50 Best list. Instead of being called The Tiny Cup, it should really be called the Tiny Bar because it only has like ~10 seats or so. There’s also this private underground cave that was really cool. All of the drinks here are so unique, I ordered a “chocolate champagne” where they infuse vodka with chocolate and champagne. So that it literally tastes like truffles when you’re drinking it. It was delicious 🍫
For dinner, you can walk a few minutes right around the corner from the Tiny Cup and dive into a plate of traditional Rostbratwürste (aka sausage) at Wirtshaus Paulaner am DOM. Where Bavarian flavors meet a warm, classic pub atmosphere. This place kinda reminded me of what I think Oktoberfest would be like if it were inside a restaurant. Lots of flags and steins both indoors and outdoors but it was great. The food was 💯
For your final nightcap in Frankfurt, head to Moloko+, a sleek, dimly lit bar with creative drinks and a cool vibe. I ordered the “red flag” 🚩cocktail which was made with gin, habanero, milky oolong, and Japanese plum. It was really delicious and had a nice kick to it. I would’ve never thought to mix gin and milky oolong together but Moloko+ absolutely nailed the flavors. All 3 of these bars and restaurants are located within 5 minutes of each other, making it really easy to bounce around these places when visiting Frankfurt in one day.
Finally, you can put a fork in you because you might be done. You came, you saw, you conquered all of Frankfurt in one day. So call that uber back to Moxy Frankfurt City Center and get a good’s night sleep 😴
In addition to the Here are some commonly asked questions for first time visitors to Frankfurt 🍻
In Frankfurt, the official language is German but similar to most parts of Western Europe, you’ll be able to get by just fine using English.
Frankfurt uses the Euro (€), like the rest of Germany and most of the European Union.
Frankfurt is famous for its skyline, which earns it the nickname “Mainhattan” (a mix of the Main River and Manhattan). It’s also a major financial hub, home to the European Central Bank. Beyond that, it’s known for its historical sites, like Römerberg, the Frankfurt Cathedral, the Senckenberg Nature Museum, Städel Art Museum, and being the birthplace of writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
🌭🌭🌭 As part of your one day Frankfurt itinerary, you’ll want to know that those “delicious” Frankfurters (aka hot dogs) actually originated in Frankfurt! The name “Frankfurter” comes from this very city, where the sausage was first made in the 13th century. Legend has it that Johann Georghehner, a butcher, was the first to sell the sausage in the 1800s. It quickly became popular and spread worldwide, eventually evolving into what we now recognize as the hot dog.
So, while the modern hot dog has been adapted in many ways, it all started in Frankfurt! 🌭🌭🌭
Frankfurt can be on the pricier side, especially when it comes to dining and accommodations, but it’s still possible to explore on a budget. Public transport is affordable, and you can find reasonable options for food, hotels, and attractions (like the extremely reasonably priced $27 walking tour I joined).
